〈땅에서 구름으로〉는 기술 발달로 인한 ‘보는 주체’의 변화와 새로운 시각성을 탐구하는 작업이다. 이는 터의 이동이라는 관점에서 재현 매체의 변화를 사유해 온 연작의 세 번째 프로젝트에 해당하며, 사진이 전환이라는 개념을 어떻게 시각화할 수 있는지를 다른 방식으로 탐색한다. 현대 기술이 점점 촉각을 소거하는 방향으로 나아가는 반면, 이 프로젝트는 새로운 기술을 통해 또 다른 접촉을 시도한다. 수많은 점들이 모여 형성된 풍경은 촉감의 지형이자 새로운 시각성의 지층이 된다. 사진은 오랫동안 사실성을 대변해 왔지만, 기계적 관점에서는 오히려 추상에 가까운 체계이기도 하다. 반대로 레조그래피는 인간에게는 추상처럼 보이지만, 기계에는 구체적인 좌표값을 지닌 구상적 풍경에 가깝다. 이처럼 인간에게 추상으로 지각되는 것이 기계에는 구상으로 기능하는 상황에서, 우리는 여전히 인간의 지각을 기준으로 추상과 구상을 구분할 수 있을까. 이 작업은 시각의 중심 주체가 기계로 이동하는 국면에서 인간의 인지 체계가 어떻게 전환되는지를 드러내며, ‘기계가 본다’는 것의 의미와 그 이후 세계의 새로운 풍경을 탐구한다.

The third part, entitled From Earth to Cloud, presents work that explores the new visuality and changes to the “viewing subject” as a result of technological developments. This corresponds to a third chapter in the Flowing Earth series, which has examined changes in representational media through the lens of movements in the land. It adopts a different approach to investigate how photography might visualize the concept of “transition.” While contemporary technology moves increasingly in a direction of eradicating touch, this project attempts a different form of content based on new technology. The landscapes that are formed as innumerable points come together create a topography of touch and a new stratum of visuality. Photography has long represented factuality, but from a mechanical standpoint, it is a system more akin to abstraction. In contrast, lazography may appear abstract to human viewers, but to a machine, it is more of a figurative landscape with concrete coordinates. In this kind of situation where the things perceived as abstract by human viewers function as figuration to a machine, can we still use human perceptions as a basis for distinguishing the abstract from the figurative? This work shows how the human cognitive system is transforming as the role of the central “subject” in vision shifts toward the machine. In this process, it explores what it means for a machine to “see”—together with the new language of the ensuing world.
